Folk Art Free Machine Embroidery

Use colourful patterned fabrics to make an appliqued folk-art wall hanging or cushion front. Discover the wonderful heat-activated textile material Bondaweb to layer coloured and patterned fabrics in Scandinavian and American inspired folk-art designs, then learn free-machine embroidery or add hand embroidery, and finish with buttons and braids to create a unique art quilt or cushion front. Bring your own sewing machine, or share time on one of mine.

Free Machine Embroidery – Mini Art Quilt

Learn the addictive art of free machine embroidery at this experimental workshop. Layer a wide selection of recycled fabric scraps, sari borders, yarns, silk flowers and fibres to create your design, then top with translucent shot organza and free-machine through the layers to create a stunning and colourful textile art quilt. A minimum of one sewing machine between two participants (or bring your own -bring your user manual or download it from the internet if it has been lost).

Beautiful Bags

Use colourful dupion and sari silks to build your design using bondaweb fabric adhesive, then embellish with hand and/or free machine embroidery, beads and Indian embellishments. You will complete a small shoulder bag, tablet cover (bring dimensions) or purse. You can bring your own sewing machine or share time on one of mine.

Silk Painting Workshop

Explore the exciting art of silk painting in this relaxing workshop.  Choose from a wide variety of inspirational designs from many cultures, ranging from traditional Celtic images to South Asian peacocks, which you can trace onto your silk (up to half a metre), so no need to be expert at drawing, or you can use your own designs if you prefer. Discover how to get the best effects from vibrant silk paints and gutta, and experiment with salt to create interesting special effects to create your own unique piece of silk art.

From Print to Stitch – Indian Inspirations

Print your own beautiful fabric piece to embellish and stitch, then make into a cushion front, tablet case or bag (may need to be completed at home). Choose from a huge selection of hand-carved traditional Indian print blocks to print onto white cotton or bright dupion and sari silks using colourful fabric paints. Dry and fix by ironing, then learn traditional Indian embroidery techniques such as kantha stitch and discover how to sew shisha mirrors to embellish your print. Finally complete your project (share time on my sewing machines or bring your own).

Suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced.

This workshop is subsidized to coincide with the Embroiderers Guild exhibition at the Museum.

Beautiful Bags

Create a decorative design using colourful dupion and sari silks on your background fabric using bondaweb, then embellish with hand and/or free machine embroidery, beads and metal Indian embellishments . This workshop will guide you in creating your own unique designs, and teach you the art of free machine embroidery using silk and rayon Madeira threads  as well as Indian Kantha stitch hand embroidery. You will complete a small shoulder bag, tablet cover (bring dimensions) or purse. You can bring your own sewing machine or share time on one of mine.

Suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced.

Dye and Block Print a Silk Scarf

Dye a generous 2 metre length of heavyweight habotai silk using vibrant silk paints, then iron to dry and fix the dyes. Next learn the art of successful block printing on a trial sample, choosing from over 200 hand-carved Indian printing blocks. Finally use fabric paints and metallic lumiere colours to add block printed designs to create your own unique scarf, and learn how to turn a rolled hem on silk.
