World Cultures and Faiths: Islam

Starting with respectful handling and investigation of Islamic faith objects, this workshop will help your children to learn about Muslim beliefs and to compare Muslim worship with their own faiths or special celebrations.

After handling a prayer mat and Q’uraan stand, a compass to determine the direction of Mecca, a model of the Kaa’ba and examples of Islamic calligraphy, the children will take part in a craft activity such as creating their own decorated calligraphy in the shape of a fruit to give a positive message to the world (inspired by the Bismillah calligraphy from the Q’uraan embroidered in the shape of a pear). If there is more time available, the children could create Mosque pictures using wax resist techniques and embellishing their work with jewels, sequins and glitter glues.
