World Cultures and Faiths: Diwali

Handling objects include Hindu faith objects, divas, Lakshmi coin and statue and garlands. The story of Rama and Sita is retold and Diwali is compared with other festivals of light. Children discuss sources of light in darkness and how light makes us feel in the dark, and identify the victory of light over darkness as a symbol of hope. Children can make heads of the demon Ravan, clay divas patterned and decorated with jewels, garlands, the tail of Hanuman complete with flames, or use traditional hand carved Indian printing blocks to make wall hangings.
