Felting is the art of using tufts of vibrant dyed sheep’s fleece to create a whole new fabric. Using warm water, soap and lots of friction, the fleece undergoes a magical transformation into warm, colourful felt. Even nursery age children can achieve exciting results, and older children can incorporate other fibres, yarns and fabrics to create exciting embellished surfaces. Working as a team using a large window blind, really big pieces can be made, or individual pieces can be sewn together to make colourful textured wall hangings. The process is not messy, just a little damp (your classroom may seem rather like a laundry for the day) and the work will need to dry overnight. Small pieces can be made in half a day, larger ones in one day.
