Craft Workshops: Paper Fabric Techniques

Paper fabric is made by gluing layers of thin tissue weight paper (plain or patterned to add texture) to a base of muslin or thin cloth. This surface can be coloured while still wet with dyes and paints, then further decoration added when dry with markers, chalks, embossing powders and gilding wax, then finally stamped, printed and embossed. After this the paper fabric can be cut up, layered to make a picture, bag or book cover, then sewn together by hand or machine – the flexibility and strength of the paper fabric transforms it from flimsy paper into something like stiff fabric which can be made into many projects, but with incredibly richly coloured and vibrant surface decoration.
